The White Chair Compromise

Written on September 30th, 2009 by Jamie Leeone comment

By now it’s no secret that we would love to own a cream colored couch but our two black Pomeranians shed too much for that to be a pretty reality. I know that owning a light colored couch is not practical.  In fact, I once sublet an apartment with a white couch. It was one of those fabulous little daybed couches and it was beautiful. After only a few months of living with the couch it looked dingy and coffee stained. Why is it that in magazines people are always cuddling up on couches with coffee or red wine when it never works in real life?

Nevertheless the idea of having one in our home makes me swoon. After listing every reason why it was a bad idea, Peter and I decided to buy the next best thing–a white chair. The chair forces us to use five sheets of lint remover every time we welcome a guest into our home but it’s gorgeous. We opted a simple Tullsta from IKEA with a white chair cover. The shape of the chair makes it feel like it’s hugging you every time you sit down. It may be a pain to keep clean and a pain to keep the dogs off of but for us it was the perfect compromise.

Have you ever bought something completely impractical just because it was beautiful?

I came across a fabulous blog today called Thrifty Little Blog. It is about a girl who bought a house and is trying to fix it up. This comes at a great time since just last night Peter and I started talking about saving money to buy a house. The author of the blog has some great insight into the world of buying a house as well as some quick tricks to save money. If any of these things interest you then it is definitely worth reading. Soon we’ll share our money saving plans to ensure that we can afford a down payment on our first house!

Yes to Carrots

Written on September 28th, 2009 by Jamie Leeno comments

About a year ago I got really into hand cream. I’ve always taken great care of my skin but after reading an article the outlined some of the less-talked-about signs of aging (e.g., your hands and décolletage) I realized that I neglected my hands.  My quest for healthy hands led me to try many different creams but my favorite, Yes to Carrots, comes from none other than Target. The cream leaves your hands feeling silky fresh without ever feeling greasy. It’s so fabulous that even Peter will use it from time to time  (those of you who know him realize what a feat this is).

After falling in love with this hand cream I rushed out and bought chap stick, conditioner, day cream, night cream, and eye cream. They all worked but nothing came close to the hand cream. (It must be the anti-oxidants from the carrots and pumpkin.) If you need more reasons to try it know that Yes to carrots never tests on animals and uses natural organic ingredients. Really, how can you say no?

I found these pictures while looking at Sproost. I can’t help feeling a little bit of couch envy.

Uptown Dance

I LOVE dance classes. It’s sometimes difficult to motivate myself to go but once I’m there I always have a wonderful time. Peter and I are taking a couple of classes through Uptown Dance. If you’re a student in Austin and looking for a fabulous deal (what student isn’t looking for a fabulous deal?) then check out Uptown Dance’s unlimited student package. For only $50 a month you can take as many dance classes as you want! No catch. All of Ellen’s classes are particularly great! Check it out.
