I made a goal for myself to learn how to paint my nails really well by the end of April. So far it’s coming along quite well. I think when I slow down and just do it my nails look a million times better.

I’ve found various tips and tricks across the internet, but I’d love to hear yours!! Please spill the details so that I can look as fabulously put together as all of you. On that note, I have a friend who swears that women are prettier with chipped nail polish. Thoughts? Does it capture the I don’t give a F*** look or is it just plain tacky?

Back in the day when I had the time and energy for such things I too got really, really good at painting my nails. As a teenager, I used to drive my parents crazy by spending hours in the bathroom perfecting my technique.
The skill has served me well in that I can handle a tiny brush with extreme accuracy (if I do say so myself)–and that has enabled me to pull off some pretty remarkable furniture touch-ups!
The trick I perfected as career-focused newlywed was to paint my nails in bed, and lay my hands flat out on top of the covers as I fell asleep. (Generally, I could stay in that position long enough for my nails to “dry to the touch”, so they wouldn’t get messed up if I rolled over later.) The polish would dry to a “hard cure” overnight.
In the shower the next morning, I would examine my cuticles for any “polish outside the lines”. If I found any, I could just massage my cuticle with soapy water, and the errant polish would peel of my water-softened skin, leaving a perfect border on the curve of my nail bed. People thought for years that my nails were fake, or that I had them professionally done!
Wow Lisa! That sounds like a great trick. If I could manage to fall asleep in a relatively still way I would definitely try it. Unfortunately I’m a flopper! I’m making great progress by forcing myself to slow down and focus.
You could also take a cotton swab and dip it in nail polish remover and that would take off unneccessary nail polish.
