Hi guys! Just to let you know Peter and I will be in and out for the next couple weeks. We have a lot going on and don’t have much time to post–But we’re not gone forever and I predict that I will be posting more soon.
Anyway, after Peter and I hung our chalkboard in our house we realized that we had a perfectly good cut of mirror glass that we didn’t want to get rid of. At some point we may want to put the mirror back into the frame, so for now we want to keep it safe and accessible.

(Yes, we still need to repaint the walls downstairs. They’ve been like this since Peter moved in.)
My fiance, being the smart man that he is, said the best way to keep mirror glass safe is to lay it down flat. We instantly realized in would make a beautiful base for a centerpiece. A simple vintage tablecloth added to the simple elegance of the vase of peonies that Peter bought me today.

If you look carefully at the peonies you’ll see a tiny bit of blue floral tape painter’s tape helping to keep the arrangement together. Since Peonies are such heavy flowers it helps to add a grid structure to the top of the vase. True florist tape would have blended a million times better but because were not entertainng and I’m trying to use things we have, painter’s tape worked great. Masking tape would have worked as well. Now as our flowers continue to bloom, thy’ll have a little extra support!
I’ll have to admit that I’ve always wished I was better at arranging flowers. It just seems like such a wonderfully hostess-y thing to know how to do. Do you have any great tricks to pass on?

I also suck at flower-arranging. I think your solution worked out pretty well! Maybe next time use some clear packing tape instead? Then nobody would see it unless up close.
Yay, Jamie Lee! The chalkboard looks so good on your wall! What paint colors do you have in mind?
I think the mirror as a centerpiece base is brilliant and I think you did a great job arranging peonies. And have I mentioned how much I love peonies?? I need to see how well they might grow in Georgia.
Talk to you in a few weeks! Enjoy your time off!
Once again, your gifts for creating beauty shine through! But, the part of your photo I am awed by is in the background: your wonderful fiance, slaving away on his laptop while the beautiful mirror/ chalkboard keeps watch over him.
What’s that I see on his desk? Another vase of rich, red roses and an open bottle of merlot…or is that a cabernet? Ahh…such a romantic life you live!
Thanks everyone!!
Lisa–I definitely posted that picture for a reason. I love how Peter has such a spaced out look on his face while he’s staring at his laptop. I will admit, we do live a pretty romantic life. Peter is great about buying me flowers when I have a bad day or just because. He does it just sporadically enough that I’m never expecting it. The wine is probably a pinot–although I love Cabernet as well. We love a good glass of wine with a delicious meal.
Meg- You definitely need to try to grow some peonies. They don’t do well here in Texas (so I’m told), but they would be a gorgeous additional to your already picture-esque backyard. I haven’t decided on paint colors yet but I will say that I love the neutral background that we have right now. I’d probably just opt for something a little less sandy.
Sara- Packing tape would be a great idea! Try it and let me know how it works.
