I’m sort of torn about registries. There’s a side of me that hated the process, but the rest of me actually wishes that everyone I know had a registry so that I would always be able to buy them the perfect gift. As I recently mentioned, Peter and I registered not long ago. One of the fabulous yet horrible parts of a mordern day registry is that after you leave the store you can make changes whenever you want. Because of this, we put off several main items that we were interested in (like the drill I really want), thinking that we could always add them after we had done more research. The bad part about this is that there is so much to look at. I price checked everything between all the places that we registered to make sure that our guests would be getting the best price and I have tried to find the products that I think will last us the longest. In my researching, I’ve been looking at what some of my friends are registering for. (I guess I’m just at that age when everyone I know is getting married.) Surprisingly, while many couples differ on their choice of brands for china and cookware, every single person I checked in on registered for a Dyson vacuum.

Keep in mind these people are just my friends and family, so it might not be the most accurate search. It is interesting to me that this vacuum comes so highly regarded. I have never wanted to spend $500 on a vacuum, but with its sleek design and potential ability to tame the giant mounds of fluff that fall out of our dogs, the vacuum has made it on to our registry. (Who knows if anyone will feel compelled to buy it for us.) I’d like to take a moment to step outside my little circle and ask you, is it worth it? Or is there a different vacuum that’s a much better deal for the price? I’d love to hear what you have to say.

My friend got the Dyson for a wedding gift and seems to love it. I used it at her place once and it seemed to do the job. The only complaint I have about it is, I think it is a little heavy and it takes some getting use to, to move around. But, I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. I watched my mom for years by sweeper after sweeper. She finally bought a very nice one at a large price and hasn’t had to replace it since!
Thanks Danielle! This is good to know. I think investing in good quality products is great advice all around. I’ve heard about Dysons being heavy before. Maybe I should make a trip to the store and see how I feel moving one around.
First of all, totally go for the big ticket items. I always thought we needed to get as many 30 dollar to 50 dollar range items as we could and was totally shocked that so many people splurged for kind of expensive things. Oh, and not that you asked for advice, but I’d also make sure you register for lots of fun stuff. One of my friends recently got married and had the most boring and sparse registry of all time. It made shopping for their wedding and shower gifts a total challenge and everyone was kind of put off by it. I mean, who wants to buy a bunch of stirring spoons, you know? We all want to give something fun that we think you’ll be tickled to open!
Anyway, I’m totally rambling now but I say go for it! Heather from McKinney Living got a Dyson vacuum from a few members of her family that all went in on it together and she and her husband love it. I’m especially sensitive to good vacuums at the moment as Lee’s and my cheapo one just died and I am so anxious to give the rugs a good suck bath. There has to be something to everybody wanting one!
Do you think you and Lee will splurge for one your yourselves? I think they’re on sale at Macy’s right now, but since signing up for a registry with them I’ve been getting about a trillion emails from them a day so I could be mistaken.
I know what you mean about wanting to buy someone something fun. I always agonize over my friends’ registries and try to find something that’s really them. As of right now I think my favorite thing on our registry is a sort of chalkboard cheese board from Crate and Barrel. Peter and I love entertaining and although its super frivolous, I think it would be a really adorable accessory for a party.
Thanks for your two cents Meg. I always love hearing your great ideas!
