Interviewing: Blush Bridal Lounge

Written on November 6th, 2009 by Jamie Leeno comments

Blush Bridal Lounge

Last week Peter and I had the pleasure of meeting Erica Janke from Blush Bridal Lounge. I bought my wedding dress months ago and the whole experience was a nightmare. I remember standing in the dressing room in my underwear while a complete stranger took her time pulling dresses wondering, “How did anyone manage to spread the rumor that shopping for a wedding dress was fun?” I was discouraged and miserable so I got it over with as quickly as possible. I bought my dress on Craigslist and never looked back. But the concept of dress shopping remained in my head. I understood that somehow, someone should make it into an enjoyable experience—and Blush Bridal Lounge is doing just that.

It seems contradictory that I had such a miserable experience choosing a wedding gown but opted to approach a bridal salon for our first blog interview, but when we drove past Blush Bridal’s beautiful store front, something in my stomach jumped. The image of what buying a dress could be materialized into a real bridal lounge. When I actually met Erica any apprehensions that I may have had vanished. We flopped onto one of the four couches in the store and just began to talk. All formal interviewing went straight out the window and was replaced by me nodding and saying, “And then what happened?”

The Tiniest Bar in Texas

Written on October 24th, 2009 by Jamie Leeno comments

Peter’s sister, Anna, is in town for the weekend so we’re doing Austin-y things. We met up with her and her friends today at The Tiniest Bar in Texas. The funny thing is that Peter and I used to drive by this bar every day on our way to work and more often than not we’d say, “That place looks cute. We should go there sometime.” But it took Anna coming in from Wisconsin and telling us to meet her there for us to actually go. It’s funny how those things work.

Tiniest Bar in Texas

Overall, I really liked this bar. It has the feel of a dive bar without that awful dive bar smell. It was nice to sit outside catch up with Anna and her friends. It’s a little ways away from all the other bars in the downtown area but it’s worth the trip.

Check out other fun things to do in Austin on our Austin page.

Péché

Written on October 16th, 2009 by Jamie Leeno comments

Péché is a relatively new bar in the warehouse district of Austin that is definitely worth checking out. It has a classy appeal that’s great for a small group of friends. The bar boasts its pre-prohibition style cocktails and its French cuisine created by chef Jason Dodge. We visited with some friends about a month ago and we can vouch that their “mixologists” really are serious about their drinks. Three out of four of us couldn’t decide what to order–Peter turned out to be the decisive one– and so the bartenders started asking each of us questions about what we like and what we don’t like. Within minutes they had three drinks whipped up for all of us and they were all amazing. Dodge will release his new fall menu next week. Hopefully he won’t eliminate the pommes frites!

If you’re in the Austin area go check it out sometime on 208 W. Fourth Street. Plus, this weekend is the UT vs. OU football game which means downtown will deserted!

If you need more convincing then read the review written by Rob Balon at Fox news.

The Common Thread

The Common Thread

There’s a new fabric store in Austin that opened just in time to supply us with the materials that we needed for our end tables. As soon as we set foot in The Common Thread we realized that it wasn’t so common. Many of the fabric selections that we see offer tired prints that I could never imagine bringing into our home; but the fabrics at The Common Thread are beautiful. We walked around in awe for about thirty minutes before remembering why we had come. If you get a chance, it is definitely worth stopping by. Plus, the owner of the shop is really nice. She put up with my incredibly limited knowledge of sewing and patiently explained the differences between all of her fabric shears.

Here’s a sneak peak of the fabric we chose for our end table makeover. Check back next week to see how it all came together.

Austin City Limits 2009: !!!

Written on October 3rd, 2009 by Jamie Leeone comment

Today we fought the rain to see !!!. No, I’m not really excited (although it was pretty amazing). !!!, pronounced chk, chk, chk, is dance-punk band from Sacramento that performed earlier today at Austin City Limits. When we first arrived at the set I wasn’t impressed by the lead vocalist, Nic Offer. I thought that his voice was a little grating and that he couldn’t dance to save his life but after only one song we all fell a little bit in love with !!!. The dancing didn’t get any better but there was something unbelievably charming about the Nic Offer. He jumped out into the rain and danced on the speakers, showing that he wasn’t afraid to get wet if it meant dancing with his fans. He high-fived everyone and even jumped over the gate into the hordes of fans. The camera men went crazy trying to follow him and the security guards just gave up. I don’t know if I could listen to his whole CD but they band put on an amazing show!!!!
