Today is the four year anniversary of when Peter and I met! Can you believe it?! It feels like such a long time ago, but not all at the same time. I’m not really sure what to do with this anniversary now that we’re married. It feels a little silly to have another big celebration less than a month after our wedding anniversary, but it’s also such a special day! And besides, any excuse to celebrate is a good one, right?

Maybe it’s just me or maybe it’s because I’m married, but as a woman in my mid twenties I feel like there is constantly the question of how I will manage my future. What do I want from my life? Do I want to be a powerful career woman? Do I want to take a few years off to stay home with kids? Do I want to skip all of that to do something that I’m really passionate about? Even big websites are telling me that I can’t have it all! Sometimes I’m just so envious of the women who know what they want their futures to look like. Whatever the answer, I’m fascinated by women who have this all figured out and are happy with their choices.

Recently I went to a networking event and one of the women speaking had twin two year-old boys. She told us the story of how she was on bed rest for the last three months of her pregnancy. Every day her husband brought her zero gravity chair to work. Every day she worked from a reclining position. Eventually she went into labor—while she was on a conference call. AND THEN she called the group back on the way to the hospital!!! Eventually, her husband told her that she should really tell them what was going on.

I listened to this story and thought, “Wow that’s amazing, but that’s not at all what I want!” As much as I want to listen to others, I know that this is something that I have to decide for myself. I hear som many different messages coming at me from every angle. I don’t have the answers to what that future will look like and who may or may not be in it, but hopefully I will sometime. In the meantime, I guess I’ll keep this strange fascination with the women who know.

This weekend was Peter’s and my one year anniversary. It was fun to look back at photos of our wedding day and remember our DIY projects and laughing about seeing all of our wedding flowers in Leanne’s fridge before the wedding.

It was sweet to think back on how excited I was before the ceremony.

We felt giddy as we thought about the silly moments after the ceremony.

And we got excited about the years to come.

Thank you to all our friends and family for your sweet little notes, texts, calls, and gifts. We’ve loved celebrating with you even when you’re far away!

Okay, so we’re actually here already, but we still haven’t officially moved. Let me start from the beginning.

The past couple of months have been insane. The kind of crazy where everyday is filled with a different emotion. It all started a few months ago when our lives didn’t exactly work out as we’d planned. Peter and I had been talking about leaving Austin for the past year and a half and suddenly we became very aware that it wouldn’t happen unless we made it happen. We’re both young and I’ve always wanted to live in a city so I felt like this was our time. Later in life navigating through hoards of people might feel exhausting, but right now, to me it is exhilarating.

So, I narrowed our city choices to:

New York

Chicago

San Francisco

I absolutely love New York (or more specifically Brooklyn). My brother lives there and it is a fantastic city. Peter is from the Chicago area and loves the city, plus his parents live about an hour away. And then there was San Francisco. Neither of us had ever been, but in theory I knew that we would absolutely love it. This is where Peter and I are vastly different. I would move to a city that I had never visited. Peter would not. You could say that he’s more sane than I am or you could just say that I really love change.

Anyway, I was so set on the idea that we would both love it that I convinced him that we should go there on vacation before he went off to teach for the summer. Lo and behold we loved it!

I may write more about the whole job search process later, but to make a long story short. I flew out here, stayed in a mix of hotels, sublets, and with a sorority sister while searching for the right job. It was terrifying and ridiculously stressful, but this past week I found myself in a position with multiple job offers. The whole search had paid off!!

Tomorrow I fly back to Austin, Wednesday Peter will join me. Between Wednesday and Thursday we have to run a million errands, pick up our dogs from my mother’s house, and pack up everything. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we will drive from Austin to San Francisco where we will hopefully have an apartment waiting for us. Monday I start my new job. Again, the last few months have been insane!

So why San Francisco? As strange as it may sound: it’s mostly a weather compromise. Don’t get me wrong the city is amazing, but because Peter is always hot and I’m always cold, it’s somehow a great blend for us.

This weekend I was maid of honor in my dear friend Caroline’s wedding! I wore this dress and we all looked fabulous. (Of course Caroline looked the most fabulous of all.) On the way to the church she was a bit nervous so we all sang Going to the Chapel of Love over and over again. It was really fun and very sweet. I would post a video, but she’d probably kill me. I don’t have any pictures to share yest, but when I do, I will definitely post them. Instead here’s an adorable scratch off save the date from Martha.

If I were planning a party that needed save the dates, I would definitely consider this idea! So adorable.
