Wedding Ring vs Engagement Ring

Strangely, a lot of people find this blog because they’re trying to figure out what the difference is between an engagement ring and a wedding ring. I guess this shouldn’t be much of a surprise because during Peter’s and my engagement I talked about rings a lot (read more about my engagement ring here or my wedding ring search here and here). Basically, an engagement ring is a ring that symbolizes your promise to marry someone, whereas a wedding ring symbolizes the promise that you’re making to one another when you get married.

Engagement rings can look however you want them to. Usually in the United States, an engagement ring is a diamond ring, but many couples opt for different stones or no stone at all.

Traditionally, a wedding ring is a solid band, but many women choose to pick out diamond bands.

So, that’s a quick breakdown for any of you who’ve been curious! I hope it helps.

Have you guys seen this video? I ran into it this weekend and was completely blown away. I love how it gives you a little taste of the evolution of fashion, dance and music. I think I may have to try to get my hubby to take me dancing!

SF Budget Hotel

When we first came to visit San Francisco Peter and I were really tight on money. Everything either seemed ridiculously expensive or had tales of bed bugs on Yelp. All it takes is one account of someone crying bed bugs for me to run. I’m sure that’s not fair to the hotel. Any disgruntled customer could claim to find bed bugs and I would not stay there, but it is how it is. After an insane amount of searching we came across Casa Loma Hotel. This little hotel was a godsend. I’ll warn you that it’s a European style hotel in the sense that the toilet and shower are not attached to the room. There are a couple of toilets and  a couple of showers (separate from one another in the hall). Although it was a bit weird, I never had to wait to use the bathroom and they were always clean.

For around $50/night, this was a great alternative to a hostel. While on vacation and while interviewing, I knew I had a safe, clean place to stay.

Thriller Class

If I were still in Austin, I would totally do this! I received this in my email and it looked like so much fun that I had to share. Arthur Murray Dance Studio is teaching the Thriller Dance and everyone who learns it will be given the opportunity to participate in a flash mob!! I’m so jealous! Someone should do it and let me know how it goes!!

California Here We Come

Okay, so we’re actually here already, but we still haven’t officially moved. Let me start from the beginning.

The past couple of months have been insane. The kind of crazy where everyday is filled with a different emotion. It all started a few months ago when our lives didn’t exactly work out as we’d planned. Peter and I had been talking about leaving Austin for the past year and a half and suddenly we became very aware that it wouldn’t happen unless we made it happen. We’re both young and I’ve always wanted to live in a city so I felt like this was our time. Later in life navigating through hoards of people might feel exhausting, but right now, to me it is exhilarating.

So, I narrowed our city choices to:

  1. New York
  2. Chicago
  3. San Francisco

I absolutely love New York (or more specifically Brooklyn). My brother lives there and it is a fantastic city. Peter is from the Chicago area and loves the city, plus his parents live about an hour away. And then there was San Francisco. Neither of us had ever been, but in theory I knew that we would absolutely love it. This is where Peter and I are vastly different. I would move to a city that I had never visited. Peter would not. You could say that he’s more sane than I am or you could just say that I really love change.

Anyway, I was so set on the idea that we would both love it that I convinced him that we should go there on vacation before he went off to teach for the summer. Lo and behold we loved it!

I may write more about the whole job search process later, but to make a long story short. I flew out here, stayed in a mix of hotels, sublets, and with a sorority sister while searching for the right job. It was terrifying and ridiculously stressful, but this past week I found myself in a position with multiple job offers. The whole search had paid off!!

Tomorrow I fly back to Austin, Wednesday Peter will join me. Between Wednesday and Thursday we have to run a million errands, pick up our dogs from my mother’s house, and pack up everything. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we will drive from Austin to San Francisco where we will hopefully have an apartment waiting for us. Monday I start my new job. Again, the last few months have been insane!

So why San Francisco? As strange as it may sound: it’s mostly a weather compromise. Don’t get me wrong the city is amazing, but because Peter is always hot and I’m always cold, it’s somehow a great blend for us.
